Tarot Birth Card Calculator

Enter your date of birth to find your tarot birth cards using Mary K. Greer's method. Most people get two Major Arcana cards: a personality card and a soul card. Treat them as a lens for reflection, not a prediction.

Your date of birth

How the tarot birth card is calculated

Write your birth date as numbers and add the month, the day and the full year. For 14 August 1990 that is 8 + 14 + 1990 = 2012. If the total is above 21, add its digits (2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 5) and repeat until you reach 21 or less. That number is your first birth card. If it has two digits, add them to get a second card: 16 becomes 1 + 6 = 7, so The Tower and The Chariot. A single-digit result gives one card. 19 is the only total that gives three: 19, 10 and 1, The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. The Fool never comes up.

Worked example: 14 August 1990

8+14+1990=2012→5

Birth cards vs. the Destiny Matrix

Birth cards come from one sum of your whole date, so they give you one to three cards. The Destiny Matrix works differently: it reduces your day, month and year separately to numbers from 1 to 22, then combines them into a full chart of 36 positions covering character, relationships, money and purpose. It's a much wider picture.

Frequently asked

  • What is a tarot birth card?

A tarot birth card is a Major Arcana card worked out from your date of birth. The method was popularized by tarot author Mary K. Greer: you add the numbers of your birth date and reduce the total to 21 or less. Most people get a pair of cards. They describe themes to reflect on, not events that will happen to you.

  • What is the difference between the personality card and the soul card?

In Greer's terms, the higher card is your personality card: how you tend to show up, act and meet the world. The single-digit card is your soul card: the quieter, deeper thread underneath. If your total is a single digit, one card plays both roles. If your total is 19, Wheel of Fortune sits between the two.

  • Why can't I get The Fool as a birth card?

The Fool is numbered 22 here (or 0 in some decks), and the method stops reducing once the total is 21 or less. Any total above 21 is reduced again by adding its digits, so 22 becomes 4, The Emperor. No birth date can land on The Fool, which is why some readers see it as the card that belongs to everyone.

  • Is this the same as my Destiny Matrix or life path number?

No. Your life path number reduces the date to a single digit (or a master number), and the Destiny Matrix reduces day, month and year separately to build a 36-position chart. Tarot birth cards use one total kept at 21 or below. All three start from the same date, so they often share themes, but they answer different questions.
